Since 1997, the Capitol Pops has performed a diverse portfolio of high-quality, well-prepared music for thousands of patrons throughout Northern California.
Based in Citrus Heights, the band is a self-supporting, all-volunteer band. The musicians represent a wide cross-section of the Sacramento area, ranging in age from high school to 80s.
Director
The Director leads rehearsals and performances, selects music for performance, works with the board to determine overall artistic direction and collaborates with the board on fundraising and promotional activities.
New director to the band in the Spring of 2022, but not new to directing. She is looking forward to an exciting new year and new music.
Susan is the former director of the Symphonic and Concert Bands and the Musical Theater Ensemble at American River College. In addition, she teaches Music History, Music Fundamentals, and Piano. She built a music program at La Canada High School (Southern California) from 70 to 350 musicians prior to coming to ARC. While there, the bands and orchestras traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States. Prof. Hamre received her Masters Degree in Instrumental Conducting from Cal State University, Northridge, and her Bachelors in Music (French Horn performance) from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD.
Board Members
The Board is elected by the members of the band and serves for a two year period, for no more than two terms. They set the overall direction and policies of the organization, oversee the financial and operation management, hires and evaluates the director, plans and implements fundraising activities and promote the mission and visibility of the band. The section leaders provide guidance to members within their specific instrument section, work with the musical director to ensure their section is prepared for performances and communicate information and changes from the musical director to their sections.
